The concept of future fuel may seem new, but it's a model that has been applied to nearly every marketplace that exists. As an example, let's think about air travel. For many years, the only way to purchase an airline ticket was at the airport ticket counter on the day you wanted to travel. The price you paid was the price of the ticket that day.
Today, you can buy and reserve a flight many months in advance, watching trends in prices and shopping around on your favorite websites. Airlines adjust ticket prices based on many factors, but as a traveler, you're in control of when you buy.
Gasology adopts the same model, where fuel merchants can price fuel for future delivery while customers can shop those offers for the best price.
How does future fuel work?
When merchants design a price on Gasology, they choose which time period the price applies for – a specific day, month, or year. A consumer can choose which time period to see when searching for fuel. If merchant offers meet those specific search criteria, the consumer will be able to see those price offers and make a fuel reservation with the merchant.
For purchases for today, a buyer can request delivery immediately after making the reservation. For future purchases, buyers can request shipment of their entire order or bit by bit as they need it during the relevant period.
How far into the future can I buy or sell fuel?
Merchants can offer fuel for sale for any specific day up to seven days in the future, with fuel sold for "today" considered spot. Future fuel can be bought and sold up to 36 months or 12 years into the future.
